Professional Experience

February 1988- July 1991:
Head of Teaching Assistants in Histology-Cytology at the Veterinary Science Institute (University of Blida), Algeria: I supervised junior teaching assistants and taught basic histology and cell ultra-structure (light- and electron microscopy) to undergraduate students as well as directed the overall operations of the laboratory portion of the course.

February 1988- July 1989:
Teaching Assistant in Genetics, School of Medicine (University of Algiers) Algeria.

December 1991- July 1992:
Lecturer in Fish Disease for student in veterinary medicine. These are a series of lectures that are taught in the span of one semester. I was fully in charge of this course. The lectures focused mainly on fish physiology and Parasitology and the consequences of some diseases in fish production in aquaculture.

September 1991- June 1994:
Lecturer in Cell Biology (University of Blida), Algeria. Undergraduate level course for student at the Veterinary Science Institute. I was fully in charge of this course. I taught the ultra-structure and the physiology of the cell with detail description of all the component of the cell and their functions.

January 1996- June 1997:
Teaching Assistant in Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Ludwig-Maximillians-University, Munich) Germany.

15th October 1999- 30th June 2002:
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular Immunology (Department of Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, USA). My independent studies in Dr Evan’s laboratory focused on characterizing the mechanisms by which Natural Killer cells are activated by synthetic oligonucleotides and bacterial DNA in teleosts (fish) model. This led me to initiate several studies into the development of DNA vaccine against Streptococcus iniae infection. Due to the endogenous processing of antigen as a mechanism to induce an immune response, DNA vaccines have several advantages over conventional vaccines, such as antigen presentation via individual MHC class I and II receptors. Furthermore, DNA vaccines have a high degree of safety and elicit significant immune responses in vertebrates. Further, these vaccines have been already tested, successfully, against several diseases including asthma and diabetes. Recently synthetic DNA was used as a potent immunotherapeutic agent of cancer when injected intratumorally or peritumorally. These studies culminated into several research articles that were published in reputable journals in the field of immunology and parasitology (see CV) as well as others that are in preparation.

26th August 2002- 4th June 2004:
Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO). To further my understanding on the function of CpG motifs (DNA vaccine) in the immune modulation of the mammalian system I moved to the VIDO at the University of Saskatchewan (Canada) to work with Dr. S. Van den Hurk and Dr. L. Babiuk, a pioneer in the field. The goal of my work at VIDO is to use CpG ODNs as adjuvant in formulation with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccines. I also address the ability of CpG ODN to shift immune responses as well as enhance protection from virus challenge. In addition, my work will contribute to understand the RSV infection at the molecular level. A good knowledge of the immune response will allow us to interfere with the infection process to achieve improved therapeutic strategies. My initial observations in this independent project have now been published in the Journal of Virology and Virology.

June 2004 – 15th August 2005:
Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the School of Medicine of Louisiana State University. Allergic asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are complex respiratory disorders that affect millions of individuals worldwide. To understand the role of the immune system and particularly the delicate balance between Th1 and Th2 response, observed in RSV model as well as in allergic reactions, I joined the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine of Louisiana State University. Indeed, RSV is considered as the most commonly implicated virus linked to viral-induced bronchiolitis with the subsequent development of recurrent wheezing and asthma. In my asthma project I am using knockout mice that lack the expression of some genes, to understand the mechanisms by which the immune system is regulating the response to allergen and particularly the role of some proteins like PARP in the lung inflammation. My initial results have been presented in the Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego California (April 2005) and published in the international journals in the field of Immunology and Allergies.

2005-2014- Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. University of Blida and Médéa (Algeria).
